JOURNEYMAN UPGRADE CLASSES AND TESTS

These classes and tests are an attempt by the Local Union and the Apprenticeship Committee to offer skills upgrading to our membership.  This is done to help keep our membership highly skilled and more employable and to keep our employers more competitive.

All of these classes and tests are offered to members of Iron Workers Local Union No. 404.  If you sign up for these classes, please be considerate and respectful by:

  • Calling to register for a class at least 1 week in advance.

  • Planning to attend EVERY day –If classes span more than one day.

  • Showing up on time – all classes will start at 7:00am (unless otherwise noted).

  • Staying for the entire class – some are 10 hours or more in one day.

  • Calling as early as possible if you are unable to attend a class you signed up for.

JOURNEYMAN UPGRADE CLASSES

The following is a list of classes and tests available through the Apprenticeship program.  If you are interested in a class simply contact Samantha Irvin and request your name be put on the list for the next available class or test.  You will be contacted when the class or test becomes available.

  • OSHA 10 – This is a 2 day class, it will be scheduled when 5 or more members agree to attend. (Please note: Due to OSHA Policy, all OSHA training shall not exceed 7½ hours in one day.  Therefore, OSHA 10 must be spread out over 2 days.) 

  • OSHA 30 – This is a 4 day class, it will be scheduled when 7 or more members agree to attend.

  • MSHA – This is a full day class, it will be scheduled when 5 or more members agree to attend.

  • Subpart R – This is a full day class, it will be scheduled when 5 or more members agree to attend.

  • First Aid / CPR – This is a full day class, it will be scheduled when 5 or more members agree to attend.

WELDING PRACTICE & TESTS

Our AWS Accredited Test Facility is currently open for practice and testing to our members.

PLEASE CALL TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO COME IN AND PRACTICE.

Also, updating your weld certs may be done prior to the Wednesday night union meeting.

The member is responsible to bring their own welding tools and safety equipment when practicing or testing.  Limited tools and equipment are available for the use of our members and are available on a first come first serve basis.  Appropriate work attire is required to be in the weld shop.

If you do not arrive on time for the tests, you will be asked to reschedule.

  1. All 3/8” tests are approximately a 5 hour test for 2 positions.

  2. All 1” tests are a full day test for 2 positions.

The following weld tests are currently available to our members:

  • Flux core Arc Welding - 3/8" & 1” plate tests.

  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick) - 3/8" & 1” plate tests.

When taking the test, it is recommended that you bring the following:

  • Flashlight

  • Pick

  • Welding Shield

  • Gloves

  • Chipping Hammer

  • Wire Brush

  • Welding Jacket

All members will be required to make a practice welds to prove you have sufficient skills before you will be allowed to test.
